Wharton Business Analytics Ranking: 2
Big Data offers more insight than every before to smart companies who know how to make use of it. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done, especially given the fact that the amount of data produced is literally increasing by the second. This creates another opportunity: Those who know how to make sense of this avalanche of information will be well positioned for business and life.
The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania offers one of the most advanced and effective business analytics master’s degrees available today, with a cutting-edge combination of business practice and data science that will make you eminently employable. Want to learn more? Keep reading.
How Long Is the Wharton Business Analytics Program?
The business analytics program at The Wharton School works a little differently than others. The main distinction is that while many schools offer a Master of Science in Business Analytics, Wharton offers it as a concentration within the broader Master of Business Administration (MBA). That degree, according to the program website, “is designed for a full-time residency consisting of four academic terms; fall and spring over two years.”
What Will You Learn?
During your time in business school, you will learn a great deal about management, operations, marketing, sales and other commerce-driven subjects. You will then choose a “major” within the MBA program, which in this case would be business analytics. As such, you would take a number of courses that counted toward that major, many related specifically to data and others more general to business.
A sampling of courses that count toward the focus area include:
- Financial Reporting and Business Analysis
- Applied Data Analysis
- Healthcare Data & Analytics
- Big Data, Big Responsibilities: The Law and Ethics of Business Analytics
- Data and Analysis for Marketing Decisions
- Experiments for Business Decision Making
- Analytics for Revenue Management
- Mathematical Modeling and its Applications in Finance
- Understanding Behavior with Big Data
- Modern Data Mining
- Forecasting Methods for Management
- Data Analytics and Statistical Computing
What Opportunities Does the Program Offer?
The MBA at Wharton offers a number of additional opportunities as compared to other business analytics programs. These include:
- Multiple majors: If you want to put more than one focus area on your resume, you can, by taking additional credit hours toward a second major. You can even overlap some courses.
- Independent study: Have your own idea for valuable coursework? Your advisor will help you design your own project.
- Non–Wharton classes: You can take one credit hour of non-Wharton courses and count it toward your MBA degree.
- Electives: Wharton offers a huge range of electives in ten different departments, allowing you to cherry-pick your interest areas and design the resume that best matches your interests down the road.
How Can You Pay for School?
Tuition at UPenn costs a little more than $50,000 a year, which means to complete the MBA you’re looking at about $100,000, plus fees and events, lodging and board. That will come to more than $150,000 when all is said and done, so it’s important to explore both scholarship options (because you never have to pay that money back) and financial aid, which you can get through the federal government or private institutions.
